Project manager and graduate student: “The effort pays off!”

His father was a boiler and tank builder, his brother an industrial mechanic – training in industry ran in the family, so to speak, for Lutz Baggeröhr. Two internships and several vacation jobs during his school year solidified his decision. The offer to complete his technical college entrance qualification alongside his training came just at the right time. Following his trainee, thyssenkrupp Polysius offered him the opportunity to study mechanical engineering while working. This laid the foundation – his enthusiasm for technology kept motivating him to pursue further education. In 2019, he finally decided to study for a master’s degree.

In retrospect, Lutz Baggeröhr says that part-time study has a lot to offer, but also involves a lot of work. For him, however, the work paid off. In the end, he says, studying is not only a certain investment of time, but also an investment in oneself and one’s own future.

Studying is not only associated with a certain investment of time, it is an investment in oneself and one's future.

Lutz Baggeröhr, Project Manager

It was an advantage that his colleagues always showed understanding and respect for his situation and supported him in difficult phases. He also gives the advice to take deliberate time off to maintain a balance between work and leisure. Going through everyday life step by step has kept him from being intimidated by the big picture, he says. He adds that one quote from a colleague at work has stuck with him particularly throughout his career: “Working life is a marathon, not a sprint.”

Studying while working has not only given Lutz Baggeröhr a higher level of education, but also many special experiences at thyssenkrupp Polysius. He has particularly fond memories of his time in the manufacturing. The final assembly of roll units, which sometimes weighed over 100 tons, is one of his favorite memories. He says that working as one with all his colleagues and getting an impressive end product has had a great impact on him. The last four years of project work have also brought one or two exciting projects that have sparked Lutz Baggeröhr’s enthusiasm for innovative technologies and the #grey2green journey.

In more than ten years at thyssenkrupp Polysius, Lutz Baggeröhr has seen a lot. As a witness to numerous restructurings, he welcomes the re-naming of the business unit Cement Technologies to Polysius. He looks forward to the future of thyssenkrupp Polysius and is convinced that the re-naming will move the company forward. “It motivates me to turn the tailwind from the old days into momentum for innovative technologies”; he says.

The bottom line: For Lutz Baggeröhr, one thing is certain: part-time degrees involve a lot of effort, but it pays off in the end. He looks back on an eventful time, which would probably not have been possible without his colleagues, his family and the support of the company. Through sports and other free time activities, he was able to maintain balance and lead a student life full of variety. He recommends this educational path to anyone who wants to invest in themselves and their future. Either or… Mountains or sea? Mountains. Morning person or night owl? The early bird catches the worm. Home-office or office? The mixture makes the difference. Tea or coffee? Both. Summer or winter? Summer!
