Starting signal for construction of one of the world’s first carbon-neutral cement plants – thyssenkrupp supplies innovative “pure oxyfuel” technology, enabling CO2 capture

With the words "thyssenkrupp, Holcim and Linde are spearheading the climate movement!", Robert Habeck praised the companies involved in the project. The Minister continued: "The cement industry is facing a particularly big challenge in decarbonization. Here in Lägerdorf, we are now showing how it can be done: decarbonizing production and boldly implementing climate-neutral production of cement and concrete. The fact that the carbon dioxide can not only be captured but also reused as a raw material is a prime example of the green transformation."

Daniel Günther, Minister President of Schleswig-Holstein, also expressed his enthusiasm: "Today we are giving the go-ahead for another innovative German industrial project. The prototype for the decarbonization of the cement industry is being built on an industrial scale in Lägerdorf. This shows once again that the future is climate-neutral. And this future begins here in Schleswig-Holstein, the number one state for the energy transition."

With an annual global cement production of more than four billion tons, we see enormous growth potential for our innovative technology.

Dr. Cetin Nazikkol, Chief Strategy Officer at thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies

In his welcome address, Dr. Cetin Nazikkol, Chief Strategy Officer at thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies, underlined the enormous potential of pure-oxyfuel technology for thyssenkrupp: "...We help our customers to almost completely capture the CO2  generated in the production process and thus reuse it sustainably. With an annual global cement production of more than four billion tons, we see enormous growth potential for our innovative technology."

The bottom line: The commissioning of one of the world's first CO2-neutral cement plants in Lägerdorf is planned for 2028/2029.
